Mipham Rinpoche [Tib. ’jam mgon mi pham rin po che, 1846-1912]. Jamgon is a title referring to Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, and Mipham refers to the exalted Tibetan Buddhist master Mipham Jamyang Namgyal Gyatso [mi pham ’jam dbyangs rnam rgyal rgya mtsho]. Mipham Rinpoche was a renowned Nyingma scholar and master of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, considered to be an emanation of Manjushri and Nubchen Sangye Yeshe, among others. To list but a few, he was a student of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (his root guru), Jamgon Kongtrul the Great, and Dza Patrul Rinpoche. Even though Mipham Rinpoche attained the highest realization of Dzogchen, he was a simple and humble wandering-hermitage monk. The great terton Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo—himself an emanation of Vimalamitra—entrusted Mipham Rinpoche as a vajra regent. In brief, Mipham wrote diversely, from his own direct knowledge, on topics from all ten sciences, and his printed works fill thirty-two volumes. These works later became the textbooks used in all the Nyingma monastic institutions.
